Appliance Recycling in Florida: Fridges, ACs, Freon

How Florida law handles refrigerator and AC recycling — including the freon recovery rule most homeowners don't know about — and what appliance pickup actually costs.

Appliance Recycling in Florida: Fridges, ACs, Freon

The Florida freon rule

Under Florida DEP rules aligned with EPA Section 608, refrigerators, freezers, window ACs, and dehumidifiers cannot go straight to a landfill. The refrigerant (freon or its modern equivalents) must be recovered by an EPA-certified technician before the shell is scrapped.

That's not something homeowners can DIY. It's also why municipal bulk pickup often skips fridges left at the curb — they can't legally take them without certified recovery.

What we do with your old fridge

Refrigeration appliances we pick up go to a certified Central Florida recycling facility where refrigerants are recovered, motors and compressors are pulled for scrap, and the steel shell is baled for a scrap yard. The plastic and insulation are the only landfill-bound components.

That entire process is included in the appliance pickup price — no separate recycling fee.

Appliance pickup pricing

Single-appliance pickups in the Orlando area typically run:

  • Refrigerator or freezer: $89–$119
  • Washer or dryer: $89–$109
  • Dishwasher, range, or oven: $89–$99
  • Window AC unit: $79–$89
  • Combined pickup (2+ appliances at once): about 30% less than individual

Working vs. non-working appliances

Working appliances under 10 years old may qualify for donation to Habitat for Humanity ReStore or Salvation Army — they often pick up at no charge but scheduling can take 1–3 weeks.

Non-working or older appliances go straight to recycling. Same price, same-day availability, no waiting for donation approvals.

Duke Energy rebate program (bonus)

Duke Energy Florida runs a periodic rebate program for old, working second refrigerators — typically $30–$50 mail-in for scheduled pickup. Worth checking their site before you book with us if you have a second garage fridge that still runs.

Frequently asked questions

Do you disconnect the appliance for me?+

Yes — our crew handles standard disconnects (unplug, water line for fridges and washers, dryer vent). Hard-wired ranges and gas lines need a licensed technician first for safety.

Does the appliance have to be empty?+

Fridges and freezers should be empty — the crew won't dispose of spoiled food. Washer drums empty, oven interiors empty. Everything else we handle.

Can you take a fridge with the doors still on?+

Yes — we remove the doors during pickup as an OSHA safety practice. Children can suffocate in unattended fridges with doors intact.
